Archiving Multitrack Masters

Why Archive?

Your valuable 5 years and older master tapes are becoming unplayable due to Sticky-Shed Syndrome. But now you can archive them economically by transferring them to Pro Tools Digital format. Dozens of multitrack recordings can be archived onto an inexpensive hard drive or DDS-4 backup.

The binder ("glue") used in analog recording tapes breaks down after a few years, causing the tapes to shed oxide onto the tape heads. This slows the tape down and muffles the highs. If your tapes have a mild case, we can adjust our machine parameters to allow them to be played. Otherwise we can bake them to render them playable long enough to be transferred. With more years of experience with this process than anyone else in NY, we will treat your masters with the care they deserve.

We can accommodate most popular analog formats and three kinds of noise reduction. In the New York area we can even provide pick up and delivery.

What is Baking?

Over time, the binder used in professional tape formulations absorbs water. When enough water has been absorbed, it causes Sticky Shed Syndrome. "Baking" the tape drives out the water, allowing the tape to be played. We have determined the proper temperature, time and other factors to achieve consistently good results. And because we do the baking and the transfers, we can transfer the tapes at the optimum time: within a few hours after they are baked.
